Even though most people ride out storms in their homes, it is important to prepare personal properties and businesses to handle the cold.Here are some tips to maintain both through the duration of severely cold temperatures:
- To prevent pipes from freezing, keep cabinet doors open.
- Drain or disconnect outdoor faucets or hoses to prevent freezing. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
- Allow faucets served by exposed pipes to drip cold water. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle – helps prevent pipes from freezing.
- Keep generators outside and at least 20 feet way from your property to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your property.
- Keep your thermostat at a steady temperature and no colder than 55 degrees. Your heating bill may be higher heating bill, but it is worth preventing a more costly repair job if the pipes freeze and burst.
- Avoid using candles to prevent fires.
- Cover windows with plastic on the inside, which help insulate the property and prevent cold drafts.
- Make sure your chimney is clean before burning wood.
- To prevent fires, keep portable heaters at least 3 feet away from bedding, curtains, drapes, etc.
- Do not use portable gas camp stoves or charcoal grills inside due to deadly fumes.
- In the event water mains break, fill a bathtub with water.
- Thaw any frozen pipes with a hair dryer, NOT a torch or flame source.
